‘Ground Zero mosque’ officially scrapped ‘Market-maker’ skyscraper planned for controversial site The infamous “Ground Zero mosque” debate is officially over. A “market maker” 70-story skyscraper will soon break ground at lower Manhattan’s 45 Park Place, ending any possibility of resurrecting plans for the religious building.
Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf’s proposal four years ago to create a 15-story Islamic cultural center near the site of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks sparked a national uproar. Developer Sharif El-Gamal of Soho Properties, who was originally on board with the plan, rendered the whole debate moot by opting to build a 667-foot condominium tower for the property instead, Crain’s New York Business reported Friday.
El-Gamal told Crain’s his skyscraper will include 5 full-floor units of 3,200 to 3,700 square feet, and average prices higher than $3,000 a square foot.
“Every day that we’ve been waiting, the market has been getting stronger and showing incredible signs of resilience,” Mr. El-Gamal said, the magazine reported. “The appreciation and absorption this market is showing is unprecedented.”
El-Gamal put aside plans for the “Ground Zero Mosque” in 2011 after he had trouble finding financial backers, but until now was unsure what would take its place. Public records show he bought the lot in 2009 for $4.85 million, the magazine reported.
The developer expects to break ground on the project – just two blocks from where the former World Trade Center towers stood – in early 2016, Crain’s reported.

September 5, 2010: Opinions were shared (pro and con)
The pro-mosque speaker on the right is a reporter named Mona Eltahawy. She claimed the male anti-mosque speaker spoke nothing but hate. Listening to him, all I heard was historical fact, free of emotion.
But, the two women shared their opposing opinions peacefully. They were so, so very NICE to each other!
“Peace and Love and Social Justice” look real nice on those signs while she (the pro- mosque speaker, Eltahawy) avoids having to embrace any of the historical truth about Islam; the total lack of tolerance inherent to Islam.
(BTW- the anti-mosque male speaker couldn’t get over how much he looks like a very blond Tim Robbins with weird hair)

And WHY on this sacred ground where nearly 3000 Americans were MURDERED by Islamic terrorists has Mayor Bloomberg chosen to See no Evil, Smell no evil and wants to hear NO TALK of Evil. Appallingly naive or willfully ignoring the facts is no way for the mayor of New York City to handle this distressing abuse of Ground Zero.
Amazingly, it was the “preening” NY Times (so aptly described by Pamela Geller) that broke this outrageous story on December 8, 2009, that included an slide-show! Looking through these 8 slides one cannot accept this as an innocent “renewal” of Ground Zero! This very building where ” parts of a landing gear from one of the planes that hit the World Trade Center on 9/11 broke through the roof and two floors. The Burlington Coat Factory…” and is NOW being used as a MOSQUE. How can you allow this, Mayor Bloomberg, shame on you! New York and America deserve answers. You got your third term, now EARN it! Do what’s right and ask the questions you should be asking about the money behind the purchase of this building.
Read your history. (You can skip Howard Zinn, Edward Said and Noam Chomsky, no revisionist rewrites will do) since “renewal” for Islam will surely intend to claim our sacred burial ground as their land of conquest via 9-11.
Consider some of these IMPORTANT questions you have yet to ask, Mr. Mayor:
From HudsonNew York, some hard questions are asked (as they should be) by everyone but Mayor Bloomberg:
“The Imam, Feisal Abdul Rauf, told the New York Times — which put the story on its front page Wednesday — that he has assembled several million dollars to turn it into ‘’an Islamic center near the city’s most hallowed piece of land that would stand as one of ground zero’s more unexpected and striking neighbors.’’
The 61-year-old Imam said he paid $4.85 million for it — in cash, records show. With 50,000 square feet of air rights and enough financing, he plans an ambitious project of $150 million, he said, akin to the Chautauqua Institution, the 92 Street Y or the Jewish Community Center.
The origins of such monies are unexplained; neither are the countries or entity advancing such huge donations. Most US mosques, including many in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx are funded directly or indirectly by Saudi Arabia the country to which 15 of the 19 hijackers who bombed the World TradeCenter belonged. The UAE, Qatar and Iran are other major sponsors across the USA.
The money trail is an important question that must be answered by the Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg with more than a bland comment by one of his spokesmen, Andrew Brent, who quipped to the Times, “If it’s legal, the building owners have a right to do what they want.”
At the moment, the location is not designated a mosque, but rather an overflow prayer space for another mosque, Al Farah, at 245 West Broadway in TriBeCa, where Imam Feisal is the spiritual leader. Call this creeping annexation. On 9/11, the Burlington building, with 80 employees in its basement, is where a piece of a plane plunged through the roof, from either Flight 11 or Flight 175 crashing into the south tower at 9:03 a.m..
One of the investors for future oncoming funds is listed as the Cordoba Initiative, defined as an ‘’interfaith group’’ – and founded by Imam Feisal. Cordoba is the name militant Muslims often invoke when they recall the glory of Muslim empire in the centuries they occupied Spain.
As a former New York Times and Wall Street Journal correspondent, and as a New York Sun columnist who covered Islamic Fundamentalism extensively overseas and in the USA, I find the facts oddly lacking. The story as reported fails to answer, and avoid asking, so many pertinent questions.”
Immediately as the story broke at the NY Times, more of the isanity was revealed by Atlas Shrugs:

Joan Brown Campbell, director of the department of religion at the Chautauqua Institution in upstate New York and former general secretaryof the National Council of Churches of Christ U.S.A., who is a supporter of Imam Feisal, acknowledged the possibility of a backlash from those opposed to a Muslim presence at ground zero.
But, she added: ‘ Building so close is owning the tragedy. ‘ That’s the point asshat.”
And a week later the story grew with more show me the money questions from World Net Daily ” …supported by the city. The mayor’s director of the Office of Immigrant Affairs, Fatima Shama, told the Times, “We as New York Muslims have as much of a commitment to rebuilding New York as anybody.”
We’re still waiting, Mayor Bloomberg, for you to do what’s right. Will you honor those murdered on September 11, 2001 by NOT permitting a mosque to be built on Ground Zero? Or will you continue to sell them out to the highest bidder….
