The city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission has made a quick turnaround on the controversial site for a potential ground zero mosque, and will hold a vote on it this coming Tuesday, Aug. 3—during what will likely be a very calm public meeting.
The Commission held a hearing two weeks ago to discuss the potential landmark status of 45-47 Park Place, a five-story building, that stands as a prominent example of the store and loft structures that dominated the drygoods warehouse districts of the Lower Manhattan. (The Observer profiled the building earlier this month.)
While it’s not definite that the Commission will vote against a landmark designation, Mayor Bloomberg, who appoints the Commission’s members, has made his support for the mosque very clear. And though it attracted a lot of media attention and a rowdy crowd at the official hearing—moved to Hunter College to accommodate the masses—it’s not the architecture or historical significance that most care about.
But that’s exactly what the Commission will be voting on at 9:30 a.m. in the main theater of the Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts at Pace University.
The possible landmark status dates all the way back to 1989, when the Commission held public hearings to consider designation for Tribeca districts and individual sites.
Bloomberg is ramming this stab in the eye of every American through at breathtaking speed.
NMAGZ: Where there was once a coat factory, Bloomberg is ramming through a mosque; granting permission to build a mosque/community/prayer center (now called Park 51) without delay! Yet he says nothing about the rebuilding of St. Nicholas Church. A CHURCH! that was destroyed by the Islamic Terrorists on 9-11.
TEN years later the CHURCH still can’t get a break. Shame on you Bloomberg and Company. You let the Port Authority stall the rebuilding of this church and you ram-though a mosque; blatant favoritism? Prejudice? What do you call it??
The Port Authority has become a roadblock to the rebuilding of this Church. This effort is stalled while the mosque at ground zero gets fast tracked. UNACCEPTABLE!
You may remember that the citizens of Bari, Italy raised $500,000.00 and gave it to the Church’s leaders for the rebuilding effort. That money was raised in 6 months after 9/11 occurred. The Church has a deal with the Port Authority which states they would give the Church more land to rebuild. The PA keeps stalling.
Its time for us to push them forward. Here’s their website: http://www.panynj.gov . Let them know you want them to complete the deal so the Church can be rebuilt. NINE years is far too long for this outrageous delay to have gone on and we won’t stand for it.

TOMORROW MORNING! August 3, 2010. Landmark Commission. 9:30 AM . Let them know how you feel about Bloomberg’s gift to the city: A mosque for Thee, whether you want it or not!
